Sporting LORD ADVOCATE’S TRIAL
DUNEDIN GUINEAS J CANDIDATE ’ Lord Advocate, who won so impressively ' at Geraldine, has gone on the right way ’> since, and at Riccarton on Tuesday he re- - corded a brilliant “seven” which should bring him into favour for the Dunedin Guineas on Saturday. 1 To Start at 11.30 a.m. The first race at Wingatui on Saturday , is timed to start at 11.30 a.m. There will ? be 40-minute intervals between the races. J Unusual > Southland stables will not be represented at the South Canterbury meeting at Washdyke on October 17. The only horses with a Southland flavour about them in the : > nominations are Southern Sail (trained at 3 Washdyke) and Desert Maid (trained at ) Oamaru). ■ Riccarton Notes Good track conditions were experienced - at Riccarton on Tuesday. , Straight Bat strode over a mile in Imin ' 42sec, and she looks in good order. After John Gay had set the pace, Foxhaven . finished strongly to complete seven furlongs in Imin 27sec, the last four in 51sec. He was a length in front of John Gay and ’ Arabian Night, who were together. Lord Advocate was too good for St. Cloud ’ over furlongs in Imin 26sec, the last ■ four in 50sec. This was the best effort of . the morning, and Lord Advocate impressed. Islam sprinted three furlongs up the back ; with Erambie in 36sec, and Scottish Dale did 48sec for half a mile. Botany and Pallid were not hurried over five furlongs in Imin 4sec. They should race well. Adina was schooled over four hurdles and, after hitting the first hard, he gave a brilliant display over the other three. Dunedin Guineas Riders engaged for the Dunedin Guineas include: Botany, A. E. Didham; Lord Advocate, J. W. Jennings; Straight Bat, C. T. Wilson: John Gay, A. Messervy; Foxhaven, P. Spratt: Pioneer, K. E. Wilson. Lady Milne Lady Milne, who did not race last season, reappeared in the Victory Handicap at Ashburton, and although she finished only sixth the Orari-owned mare recorded 3.13, a smart run after so long a spell. Sandstone Sandstone restored himself to favour by going a sound race at Ashburton. He was placed on the outside, with other drivers giving him a wide berth. He went off reasonably well and kept his gait throughout. Half a mile from home he was leading the hopeless pursuit of Castlebar, but in the last furlong he was outstayed for second by Navy Lass. Winners at Ashburton Winners at the Ashburton patriotic trotting meeting on Saturday were Parfaite (3.29 1-5), Le Compte (3.25 3-5), Battle Colours (3.17), Pacing Power (3.12 3-5) and Castlebar (3.17). Hardy Oak. who was beaten by half a head by Pacing Power, was credited with running the mile and a-half in 3.10 4-5. Black Globe Black Globe, the Globe Derby pacer who is standing the season at the stud of Mr R. Lawrence (Mataura Island), won three races last season over distances of 12, 14 and 16 furlongs. His daughter, Rita Globe, also won twice during the season. Black Glebe is one of Globe Derby's 1931 crop. His dam. a mare named Pleaney, was got Aborigine from Kiwi. Pleaney produced a successful tribe, including General Patch, General Jacka, White Patch, Black Pansy and Black Con. Black Globe’s best winning average was at a rate of better than 2min 17sec for the mile. He was a rare stayer. Boloyna Boloyna has come on nicely during the past few weeks and the absence of a sting in the going will be in his favour for the Ranfurly Handicap, comments The Otago Daily Times. At Wingatui Coy and Damascus covered half a mile in 54 2-ssec, with the former travelling more freely than the Paper Money gelding. Boloyna. Taxpaper, and Courtdress broke away at the seven-furlong post, and the first-named was waiting with the others when concluding the distance in Imin 39sec —the last six in Imin 25sec. Steward and Kohara were responsible for seven furlongs in Imin 39 3-ssec. Kohara was heading Steward in the final furlong, but the three-year-old came on again when stirred up in the last few strides. Strip (Thompson) and Forte (Connor) were schooled over three flights of hurdles. Strip showed improved hurdling and beat his companion over each flight. New Zealand-bred The winners at Kalgoorlie on September 8 included the Matchlight gelding Vesuvius, who was foaled in 1923. The New Zealandbred Supertax wds a winner last month at Gloucester Park, where he won over 13 furlongs at a 2min 14sec rate. Straight Bat Straight Bat has been doing smart sprints, but her ability to run out a strong mile in the Dunedin Guineas has to be taken on trust. Later on she may show good form at six furlongs. Castlebar Castlebar- has been penalized 48 yards, to 60 behind, in the Improvers’ Handicap, and Battle Colours to 60 behind in the Members’ Handicap at New Brighton. Hasten Hasten, winner of the Spring Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday, is one of the best of the progeny of the imported English sire Colossus. Colossus has sired many successful racehorses in New Zealand. He is a son of Polymelus, by Cyllene, and he is descended from a full sister to Musket. LITTLE WORK AT WINGATUI (Special) DUNEDIN, October 7. With the majority of trainers waiting until tomorrow for the final gallops, there was little interest in the proceedings at Wingatui this morning. The first visitors to arrive were Gold Flight, Royal Flight and Alpine and they were given useful work. N. J. Dwyer was due with Desert Maid, The Raker, Egyptian Rose, Fairy Godmother and Slipstream during the day. The horses on the tracks included Strip. Jacksonville. Forte, Damascus, Sixpence, Courtdress, Gay Lancer, Lady Nuffield, Pianist, Boloyna, The Joker, Coy, Taxpayer, Georgia, Attorney and Town Hall. The weather has cleared again and the going on Saturday will suit horses who act well with the sting absent. Any further rain would have detrimental effects. Strip looks well and pleased his connections by the manner in which he got through a round at half pace. It was reported at the course that A. Leach might not be available to ride the Valkyrian gelding on Saturday. Boloyna has thrown off all the effects of a poisoned leg and is rapidly regaining racing shape. He may enter later discussions on the Ranfurly Handicap, but may 1 not be at his real best until the Trentham t meeting. (
