NEWS IN BRIEF
SALVAGE OF RUBBER.—Large quantities of scrap rubber have been collected in Southland during recent weeks, much of It being secured through the efforts of school children. A consignment of many tons was railed north this week for treatment in a Canterbury factory and there is now plenty of room at the depot in the garage of Hart Motors Ltd., to which any contributions should be taken. KINDERGARTENS’ STREET DAY.—The members of the council, the committees and one of the mothers’ clubs of the Invercargill free kindergartens held their annual street day yesterday. Each of the stalls did a good trade and the day was considered a most successful one. The women workers wish to thank the public for its support and firms and individuals for annual subscriptions. NATIONAL SAVINGS.— So far this week the £7OO mark has been passed towards the city’s weekly National Savings quota of £2043. Invercargill has now reached its quota for 46 weeks in succession. FOR PRISONERS OF WAR.— The first monetary donation to the effort which the Invercargill R.S.A. is making to raise money for the prisoners-of-war fund is a sum of £l4 received from Mrs B. B. Jones. ADDITIONAL COUPONS.— Appreciation has been voiced by the Dominion executive of the New Zealand R.S.A. of the decision of the Rationing Controller, Mr J. E. Thomas, to approve the issue of additional clothing coupons to all persons suffering disabilities whereby appliances are required to be worked, thereby causing increased wear and tear on clothing.—P-A.
