LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE
Lower Prices For Fat Ewes Although values for wethers at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday were firm at last week’s rates, better quality ewes were 2/easier and medium and light ewes were 3/to 4/- lower. For bullocks the market was a keen one. The first of the new season’s shorn wethers were offered. Three or four pens were sold at from 30/- to 34/-. FAT SHEEP.—There was an extra large yarding of fat sheep, consisting mainly of ewes, many of which were light and unfinished. Wethers were in short supply and the quality was light and unfinished. Compared with last week values for wethers were unchanged and good quality ewes were approximately 2/- a head lower. Light and unfinished medium sorts were 3/- to 4/lower. Good quality medium-weight wethers sold at 44/-; lightweights 36/6 to 39/-; unfinished 32/- to 34/6; prime maiden ewes at 42/-; prime quality 36/6 to 38/6; good quality from 33/- to 35/3; mediums 29/- to 32/-; light and unfinished 20/- to 24/6. FAT CATTLE.—The yarding in this section was the smallest for three or four weeks past. The entry included some exceptionally good quality bullocks, heifers and cows. For bullocks especially the market was a particularly keen one and although the prices would indicate a sharp rise in value the quality would necessarily require to be taken into consideration. For heifers and cows of all classes the market was much the same. Extra prime heavyweight bullocks sold at from £25 to £27 15/-; prime heavy £2l/10/- to £22/10/-; good quality £lB/10/- to £l9/15/-; mediums £l6/5/- to £l7/10/-; lightweights £l3 to £l4/10/-; extra good heifers to £l7/15/-; prime mediumweights £l3/15/to £l4/10/-; lightweights £ll to £l2; small £B/10/- to £9/10/-; prime quality cows to £l4/17/6; good quality £l2/10/- to £l3/15/-; medium £lO/10/- to £ll/10/-. STORE CATTLE.—There was a large entry In this section, some well-bred station cattle being offered. The sale was a good one, prices being fully maintained at those ruling at recent sales. Forward-conditioned four and five-year-old bullocks made, up to £l3/5/-; good conditioned three-year-old bullocks £ll to £l2; two-year-olds from £7 to £8; best Shorthorn yearlings up to £6; others from £3/10/- to £4/10/-; smaller down to £l/17/6; best-conditioned empty heifers made up to £7; others from £5 to £6 with lower-conditioned sorts down to £3/2/6; best-conditioned empty cows made up to £6/10/-; average sorts £4/10/- to £5 10/-; aged and cull sorts down to 30/-. DAIRY CATTLE.—In the dairy section best guaranteed sorts sold at late rates, making from £8 to £lO/2/6. Others sold at from £6 to £7/10/-; aged cows from £4 to £5; good three-year-old heifers close to profit up to £10; others from £6 to £7. STORE SHEEP.—There was a small entry in this section, the bulk of the yarding consisting of ewes with lambs at foot. The sale was a bright one, there being a good demand for all classes offered. Ewe hoggets made up to 38/9; wether hoggets to 27/-; smaller sorts down to £1; mixed aged ewes with lambs at foot up to 30/3 all counted; good-conditioned full-mouthed ewes 17/- to 19/-; others 14/6 to 16/6; aged sorts 12/- all counted. GORE STOCK SALE Good prices were secured for fat sheep at the fortnightly Gore stock sale yesterday. A single heavy wether brought 47/3, and other wethers in prime condition realized 44/and 42/-. Fat ewes also sold well and prices secured were 39/9, 39/3 and 37/9 down to 27/-. In the cattle section dairy cows brought from £5 to £B. Fat cows made up to £ll/17/6 and heifers up to £B, yearlings bringing £3/2/-. A fat bullock sold at £lO/10/-. FEWER BOBBY CALVES COLLECTED First Month Of Season Hie killings of bobby calves in Southland during the first month of the present season have shown a reduction of almost 20 per cent, on last year’s figures. The comparison has been made on the first 10 collections for each season, and it might react unfavourably against the present season because the collections began four days earlier than last year. A decline in the numbers offering was expected because collections are not being made in certain districts which formerly supplied calves. Some calves have been railed to the freezing works from those districts, but the numbers have been much smaller than in previous seasons. The total number of calves collected and killed from the first 10 collections in each season were as follows:—
The percentage of rejections during the present season has been slight!” higher than last year. Collections will continue until about the middle of November.
