Sporting HEAVY GOING AT INVERCARGILL
SOUTHLAND HORSES FOR WINGATUI Invercargill horses with engagements at Dunedin on Saturday were galloped in very heavy going at the Invercargill course yesterday morning. Heavy rain on Monday left the track in a sodden state and fast times were out of the question. Horses who acted well in the conditions were Royal Lancer, the two-year-old Invulnerable, Royal Chorus, Royal Brief and Sing Sing. Invulnerable was not handicapped greatly by the heavy track, and on the strength of recent showings he promises to race well in any going in the McLean Stakes. He has been well educated in barrier work. Royal Lancer bowled along over a mile in a manner suggestive of his best form and Royal Chorus shaped pleasingly in a sprint with Royal Brief. Sing Sing appears to have made a good recovery from the injury she suffered last season and once again moved freely in her work. Doubleack was not distressed in running a comfortable mile. He is well forward and may be expected to race prominently in the big race on Saturday. Rain at Wingafui Yesterday morning’s rain would not seriously affect the course proper at Wingatui, and if the weather is fine for the remainder of the week it will be in first-class order without being fast, states a Dunedin report. All Night All Night won so easily at Geraldine that his connections decided to keep him in the sprint at Dunedin on Saturday in preference to racing in the Ranfurly Handicap. He is now topweight with 8.4, but he will probably be made favourite. Vincent Meeting It is reported that the executive of the Racing Conference has refused the application of the Vincent Jockey Club to hold its annual meeting on the Wingatui course, and that .the club has decided that with the present petrol restrictions it would be impossible to hold the fixture, set for January 9 on its own course. Brackets Lady Don, Courtdress, Gnohill, Milton Abbas and Dark Colleen haxe two engagements at Wingatui on Saturday. There will be two brackets in the hurdle race, Colonel French and Colonel Rouge, and Strip and Forte, and in the McLean Stakes Slipstitch and Fairy Godmother will also be bracketed. Inside Only There will be only the inside enclosure available for Saturday’s meeting at Wingatui, and in view of this the committee has arranged for increased totalizator accommodation, which should reduce the congestion in the races to the machine so evident at the recent Hunt meeting held at Wingatui. Whirlaway Again By his defat of Alsab and Shut Out in a special match race at Belmont Park (United States) at the week-end, Whirlaway became the first horse in turf history to win 500,000 dollars. In the previous fortnight Whirlaway was defeated twice, by Alsab and by Bolingbroke. Sing Sing Sing Sing, unbeaten as a three-year-old, has been nominated for the President’s Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at the Gore meeting this month.
Dunedin Guineas The race for the Dunedin Guineas promises to be one of the most open contests this classic has produced for some years. Botany, Foxhaven, John Gay, and Lord Advocate have each won races this season, and Straight Bat showed good form as a two-year-old. Having won over nine furlongs at Geraldine, Lord Advocate, and John Gay. by his success in the John Grigg Stakes, seven furlongs, have the best credentials as stayers. Compeer and Money Bird Both Compeer’s and Money Bird’s names are missing from the list of acceptances for Saturday. It is bad luck for their respective owners that these two promising young horses should have gone amiss just now. It was their owners* intentions to race them at the Wellington spring meeting this month. Record Field Seventy-nine horses were accepted for in the Gordon Handicap, to be run over six furlongs at Ellerslie next Saturday, and the race will be run in three divisions. The number of acceptances constitutes a record for the Dominion. I’m Sure I’m Sure, the Quite Sure-Lady Bell gelding, who raced as a stralghtout trotter last year, will race as a pacer at the Gore meeting on October 24. Royal Style’s Progeny The first of the progeny of Royal Style (Paladin-All Style) has made its appearance at the stud of Mr J. McMillan, Gorge Road. She is a well-grown filly foal from Orangapai, by Tractor from Sweet Memory, the dam of Membo, Paladino, Nightcalm and other good gallopers. Royal Style was a performer of more than average merit, and had his racing career not been cut short he would undoubtedly have made a name for himself. Several good-class mares have been booked for him already this season. Bashful Lady _ Bashful Lady, winner of the Winter Cup, is in work again after a brief spell, and she will probably be raced at the Gore meeting. Strip . ~ Strip, who is likely to be one of the favourites for the hurdles race at Wingatui on Saturday, will probably be raced on the flat at the Gore meeting. He has been entered for the President’s Handicap. Anglo-Irish , . , Anglo-Irish, who is to take his place in the open sprint at Wingatui on Saturday, has not raced since Easter when he ran third at Beaumont. He is a rare galloper when in the mood and as he can muster up speed quickly, he may show up in the Telegraph Handicap.
Hector Gray The Takanini trainer, H. E. Gray, recognized as one of the best horsemen the Dominion has known, has again made application for a rider’s licence. The application will be considered by the New Zealand Racing Conference next month. Josedale Grattan
It had been arranged that after the Trotting Cup Josedale Grattan was to go to C. S. Donald’s stud at Belfast As a result of representations by the Auckland Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, Donald has agreed to cancel the agreement and the American pacer will return to Auckland. Josedale Grattan is to race at Epsom and Wellington before the cup meeting. GOLF COMPETITIONS AT QUEEN’S PARK The second qualifying round for the 1942 plate was played at the Queen’s Park golf links. This competition will be in two grades, eight players in each to play off on handicap. G. B. Millar headed the seniors with net scores of 76 and 70, the eighth man qualifying with a total of 159. In the juniors J. E. Armstrong, with rounds of 70 and 71, qualified first, the eighth man in this grade taking 158 strokes. Fifty-seven players took part in an Australian Stableford match, the best scores being as follows: A grade, G. B. Millar 36 points; D. L. McLennan, 35; J. D. Strettell, 34: B grade, E. Checketts, 35; A. Hodge, 32. QUEEN’S PARK LADIES* GOLF CLUB The best cards returned in the monthly L.G.U. medal round, played at Queen’s Park yesterday were:—Silver division, Mrs D. W. Robinson, 98-17-81; Mrs J. M. Mackintosh, 99-18-81; bronze division, Mrs S. Keen, 111-28-83; Mrs W. H. Gregory, 102-19-83; C grade, Mrs G. Reed. The weekly match will be held on Monday, October 12.
