SALVATION ARMY LEADERS The leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand. Commissioner J. Evan Smith and Mrs Smith, were given a civic welcome when they visited Gore yesterday. The reception was held in the Council Chambers and the Mayor. Mr W. D. Shelton, presided. Mr Shelton, in extending a hearty welcome to Commissioner and Mrs Smith, said it could be claimed that the commissioner was a “child” of the Army, as both his parents had been pioneers of the Salvation Army in the Old Country. On behalf of the Gore Ministers’ Association the Rev. W. W. Powell, welcomed the visitors. Commissioner Smith said he was deeply touched by the warmth of the welcome. Ha felt that it was extended to world Salvationists, whom he had the honour to represent.

During the afternoon Commissioner Smith was shown through Fleming and Company’s mill and the Gore R.S.A. club rooms. A women’s public meeting tn the Salvation Army hall was addressed by Mrs Smith, the Mayoress. Mrs Shelton, presiding.
