AXIS DESERT FORCES HEAVILY BOMBED
NO BIG LAND BATTLES (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 3. No major land battles are reported in the Western Desert, but the Allied air forces have given FieldMarshal Erwin Rommel’s Axis forces no rest. It is emphasized that neither side has yet made an all-out effort with its armoured forces. Lieutenant-General B. L. Montgomery, commander of the Bth Army, summed up the British position when he said: “The enemy has not penetrated any part of our organized defences.” The midday communique from Cairo states that no major land battles developed on Tuesday night, but the enemy was subjected to heavy air bombing and artillery bombardment. Light bombers harried the enemy, medium bombers raided targets in the battle area and heavy bombers plastered Tobruk. Yesterday a record number of planes bombed the enemy. Six Stukas and nine enemy fighters were shot down. Enemy shipping was attacked and a British torpedo-carrying plane scored a direct hit on an Axis merchantman.
