GIFTS FOR CHURCHILL AUCTIONS
As a result of the broadcast appeal he made on Monday night, Mr H. B. Farnall, the city librarian, has already received or has been offered, a number of gifts for the Churchill Auctions. All the gifts are books, except one. The exception is an. excellent specimen of a Maori greenstone axe (toki) presented by Mrs F. Milne. Wyndham. The axe was found on the Wyndham Ridges more than 40 years ago. The following books have been offered or received:— "A Maori History of the Taranaki Coast,” by S. Percy Smith, presented by Mrs E. L. McMeekin, Castle Rock. This work has been long out of print. Twenty volumes of the International Library of Famous Literature, presented by Mr W. S. Robertson, Orawia. Three volumes of "The National Manuscripts of Scotland," presented by Mrs Peter Tait, East Gore. "Sacred History” (1720) by Thomas L. Wood; presented by Mr A. J. Bunce, Invercargill. A beautifully bound copy of Thomas Moore's poetical works, published in 1843. This book, was presented by Mr F. Woollett, Invercargill. Four old religious books, including “The Whole Duty of Man” (1755) and “Balm in Gilead" (1766), presented by Mr H. H. Kilpatrick, Invercargill. An old Bible (no date), Knight's “Studies of Shakespeare" (1849), Pardon’s “Tales of the Operas” (1858), and “Life of John Newton, to which are added the Olney hymns (1779), presented by Mr J. C. Waters, Invercargill.
