PETROL ABUSES

Sir,—Does not your correspondent “4 Point 7” realize that there is no obligation on him to re-licence his car, and that as long as all motorists obtain the same total mileage for their licence fees there are no grounds for complaint? This correspondent/ by the comparison he draws, apparently has not heard of the convoys, shipping losses or total war. Any attempt to condone a wilful waste of war essentials is difficult to understand. Many otherwise honest people have no scruples where petrol

is concerned, and in this category is one man who recently used in a week’s holiday more petrol than a private motorist gets in a year. Is that patriotic? It is no reflection on any officials that these people can evade the regulations; but the Government should be held responsible, as it frames the legislation. As a private motorist, I am in favour of the Government putting all private cars off the road for the duration and seizing any cars used for private purposes on licence petrol. The onus of proof would be on the motorist in each case. If this policy were vigorously prosecuted, all would be on the same footing and none could complain. V.B. ,
