Sharp Increase In Beef Prices A small entry in the fat cattle section had the effect of a greatly improved market at the Lomeville stock sale yesterday and values were from £2 to £2/10/- a head better than last week's. Fat sheep also showed an improvement of 1/6 for good quality sorts and up to 3/- for medium and inferior sorts. FAT SHEEP.—The yarding in this section consisted of about equal numbers of wethers and ewes, the majority of which were of quite good quality. The sale opened with keen competition among buyers, and values throughout for the better quality sorts showed an improvement over the previous week’s sale of about 1/6 a head. Medium and inferior sorts improved to the extent of about 2/6 a head. Prime quality wethers sold at up to 43/6; good quality brought 40/6 to 42/-; medium quality 38/to 39/6; unfinished 34/6 to 37/-. Prime quality ewes sold at 33/-; good quality from 30/6 to 31/6; medium quality 28/- to 29/6; unfinished 25/6 to 27/-. FAT CATTLE.—There was only a small yarding in this section and, with the exception of a few head of good quality steers, heifers and cows, the yarding consisted mainly of inferior quality sorts. The yarding was insufficient for the requirements of butchers, with the result that the sale was animated and at times almost excited. Values generally showed an improvement of from £2 to £3 a head. Prime quality bullocks brought up to £24/10/-; good quality mediumweights £lB/10/- to £2O; lightweights £l5/10/- to £l7. Prime quality heifers sold at up to £18; goood quality £l4/10/- to £l5/15/-; lightweights £l2/10/- to £l3/10/-. Prime young cows sold at up to £l6; good quality cows £l3 5/- to £l4/10/-; medium quality £ll to £ll/15/-; unfinished £B/10/- to £9/10/-, with inferior sorts selling at from £5/15/to £7.

STORE SHEEP.—The larger entry of store sheep consisted chiefly of breeding ewes. Some, well-bred good conditioned ewe hoggets were forward and these made from £l/18/9 to £l/19/9- Smaller ewe hoggets made up to 36/-. In the ewe offering oneshear ewes made up to 37/6, two-shear ewes to 39/10 and three-shear ewes to 35/-. Good sound-mouth ewes showing well in lamb made up to 34/-; full-mouth ewes from 28/to 31/-; best failing-mouth ewes to 26/7; others at from 22/- to 24/6. Wether hoggets realized from 25/- to 26/- and store wethers made up to 29/9. STORE CATTLE.—The bulk of the entry in the store cattle section consisted of oddments. there being no straight lines offered. The sale was a good one, most of the entry selling at an advance on late rates. Bestconditioned empty cows made from £5 to £6; good-conditioned heifers up to £8; other empty heifers from £5/15/- to £6 10/-. Average empty cows made from £4 to £5, with cull sorts down to £l. Rising two-year-old steers sold at £7/17/-; yearling steers £3/10/- to £4/10/-; mixed-sex calves to £2/10/-. In the dairy section there, was a large entry. The sale was not a good one, there being very few buyers. Good guaranteed sorts made from £7/10/to £9; others £5/10/- to £7. Aged sorts did not sell readily and brought as low as £2. ’ McNAB STOCK SALE Fat wethers again brought good prices at the fortnightly McNab stock sale yesterday, up to 44/- being secured. The sheep entry was made up entirely of fat stock, the demand for which was good. Fat wethers brought up to 44/-, other prices being 41/6, 38/9, 38/3 down to 34/-. One line of fat ewes realized 28/6, other lines selling at 25/- and 24/-. The cattle yarding included several lines of fats. Fat bullocks made from £l2 to £l4/5/-, fat cows realized £ll/7/6 and fat heifers made from £7/10/- to £9/10/-. Dairy cows brought from £5/12/6 to £9 and store steers sold at £4/15/-. Yearlings made from £3/15/to £5/7/-.
