GERMAN ATTACKS HELD
FIGHTING ON STALINGRAD FRONT (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, August 30. After heavy fighting all night on the Stalingrad front, the Russian High Command reported this morning that no major changes had taken place. It is now a week since the Germans crossed the Don 50 miles from Stalingrad and they are still 35 miles from the great city at the nearest point. North-west of Stalingrad the Germans yesterday made their most dangerous drive, reinforced with a fresh armoured division and infantry division, but they were held and then the Russians counter-attacked and the Germans were driven back. In the Kotelnikovo area the Germans came under heavy fire and their drive spent itself. It is thought that the first great wave of the Russians’ attack in the Rjev area has spent itself and that the Russians are consolidating their positions.
