POSITION GRAVE IN NEW GUINEA

GREAT JUNGLE BATTLE (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 30. The position of the Allies in New Guinea has deteriorated in the last 12 hours. A great jungle battle between the Japanese forces which landed at Milne Bay, in south-east New Guinea, and Australian Imperial Force troops and militiamen has been raging for four days with increasing intensity. Earlier reports of the battle were encouraging, but it has now been revealed that the Allied position is grave. Under cover of bad weather the Japanese have massed reinforcements and pushed them far enough into the jungle to challenge the Allied positions. A second Japanese force arrived in Milne Bay under cover of bad weather. Allied planes, flying in heavy rainstorms, failed to detect the Japanese ships at sea and then could not sight them for bombing in the harbour. It is announced in Washington that American Marines are holding six Solomons Islands and have annihilated or captured all the Japanese troops who landed in attempts to recapture the islands.
