RADIO LICENCES.—A return just prepared by the post office authorities shows that there are 16,263 radio licences held in Southland. The number of households in the province is 18,176. The number of radio licences, therefore, suggests that about 89 per cent, of the homes in Southland have radios.
CONCERTS AT CAMPS.— On Thursday a concert party from Riverton gave an entertainment for the men at the camp of the 20th Independent Company and the same evening Mr C. Trim took a concert party to the recruit training depot. MINERS IDLE.— The Liverpool miners returned home yesterday because of the refusal of the truckers to work under the clipping shed where the trucks are diverted to the main rope road. The truckers contended that the shed, which had been damaged by the wind, was in a dangerous state. The management’s promise of early repair was considered inadequate.—P.A.
RADIO APPEAL.—OnIy a small percentage of the donations promised in the patriotic radio appeal on August 15 has been received, and the patriotic authorities hope that donors will honour their promises promptly. Payments should be made either to secretaries of district patriotic committees or direct to the secretary of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council (Mr W. F. Sturman). SUCCESSES AT GREYMOUTH.—Mr Alex Sutherland has received word that Coleen Keen, of Christchurch, and formerly of Invercargill, secured first in the sailors’ hornpipe under eight years, second in the Highland fling, eight years and under, third in the sword dance, 10 years and under, and was runner-up for the Boyle Cup at the Greymouth piping and dancing competitions The judge, Mr W. H. Kllgour, remarked that she danced true national dancing steps. IDLE AND DISORDERLY.—At Walroa on Thursday Frederick Smith, aged 55, was sentenced to one month to be served in the Wairoa gaol on a charge of being idle and disorderly.—P .A.
CHIMNEY FIRE.—The City Fire Brigade received a call to a chimney fire on Thursday evening to the residence of Mr H. S. Young, 318 Herbert street. No damage was done, the fire being extinguished with a bucket-pump.
