VAST AIR BATTLES OVER STALINGRAD FRONT (United Press Association— Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON, August 28. South of Leningrad and west of Moscow the Russians are successfully attacking the Germans. On the Stalingrad front the Russians successfully counter-attacked north-west of the city, but to the south-west the Germans have driven a deep wedge in th? defences. Vast air battles are raging over and behind the Stalingrad front. The Germans have launched a mass attack on the Rotterdam model on Stalingrad and the city’s residential areas have suffered. Soldiers leaving Stalingrad for the battle-front passed through great clouds of smoke from burning buildings Latest reports from Moscow claim that the Russians have stormed and captured Rjev’s northern surburbs and street fighting is now in progress near the city’s heart. One Russian force is reported to have by-passed the city. The Moscow correspondent of The Daily Express says the Russians captured Sychevka, on the railway between Rjev and Viazma, thus cutting the vital German supply line. Russians yesterday threw back 10 German attacks northwest of Stalingrad and 11 south-west of. the city. M. Stalin has appoined General Gregory Zhukov, commander on the Moscow front, his chief deputy Defence Commissar.
