Mr W. E. Leadley, a member of the Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League and a member of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Returned Services Association, who has been visiting Invercargill, will leave on his return to Wellington by the express this morning. Mr M. J. Forde, Dominion president of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute, arrived from the north yesterday and is staying at the Railway Hotel. Mr J. Mackenzie has been appointed a member of the Southland Land Board for a term of two years. Private S. Batcheler, a member of the Te Rangi Bowling Club, was met by members and handed gifts from the club and the Te Rangi Women’s Bowling Club. Good wishes were expressed by the president (Mr J. G. Holdsworth) and other members. Mr H. E. Philp, the new member for the Western District on the Southland Education Board, was welcomed at the meeting of the board yesterday by the acting chairman, Lieutenant-Colonel W. Bell. Reference to the death on active service of Captain Charles T: Mason, M.C., who at the time of his enlistment was teaching at Queenstown, was made at the meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday and a motion of sympathy with the relations was carried. Mr G. Westerby has been appointed to represent the grocers, Mr C. C. Lange the bakers and Mr C. Bradfield the city merchants on the Invercargill Zoning Committee which will draw up plans for the delivery of goods and supplies in the city on the zoning system. The other members of the committee are the Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, and the Deputy Mayor, Mr A. W. Jones. The trade representatives will act on the committee only when zoning for their particular trade is under consideration. Members of the trams, electricity, gas and Town Hall staffs, together with members of the Tramway Social Club, met at the club rooms to say farewell and to make a presentation to Mr G. Hughes, who, because of ill-health, has had to resign from his position with the City Council. Mr T. Walker presided and in presenting Mr Hughes with a sum of money expressed regret at losing his services as a fellow employee and as a club member. Mr Hughes replied. Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., was a guest of the club. Representatives of fire insurance companies in the city gathered at the Tudor Lounge on Thursday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr L. S. Graham, who has resigned from the position of secretary of the Invercargill Fire Board. Mr Graham has also been secretary o£ the Invercargill reference committee of the Underwriters’ Association since 1934. Mr G. Skipworth, who presided, presented Mr Graham with an attache case and wished him success and happiness in the future. Opportunity was also taken to welcome Mr T. Blackwood, the newly-appointed branch manager of die State Fire Insurance office. At the annual meeting of the Victoria Memorial Home yesterday afternoon those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr J. L. McG. Watson, who was chairman of the advisory board. Mr and Mrs A. G. Copland, Waimumu, have received advice that their son, Sergeant Pilot Horry Copland, is fit and well. Sergeant Pilot Copland recently took part in a raid on a gasholder at Le Trepot harbour, 20 miles from Dieppe. Advice has been received by his parents, Mr and Mrs A. J. France, Bainfield road, Waikiwi, that Flight-Sergeant J. S. France, who has been piloting a Beaufighter in the Middle East since December of last year, has been ill in hospital and is now discharged. Master Graeme Davis, Heriot street, has received word that his father, Warrant Officer Daniel G. Davis, who was reported wounded, is now discharged from hospital. A motion of sympathy with the relations of the late Mr A. Inglis, a former teacher and inspector of schools in Southland, was carried at the meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday.
