ARRESTS IN BRAZIL
(Rec. 11.10 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, August 27. More than 1000 Germans and Italians have been arrested in four days in Rio de Janeiro and nearby states and an additional 1000 have been taken into custody in outlying states. Venezuela and Colombia have granted non-belligerent status to Brazil. All nine South American countries have now granted non-belligerency recognition to Brazil. The Uruguayan Government announced that Brazil and Uruguay would co-operate in common defence against possible aggression. The Uruguayan National Defence Ministry has been authorized to adopt in agreement with the Brazilian military authorities all measures designed to improve the efficiency of the common defence. Uruguay has declared complete solidarity with Brazil.
