TORNADO DAMAGE AT KAITAIA
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 27. An immediate inspection is to be made of the damage caused by a tornado at Kaitaia by the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department and the Defence Construction Commissioner, according to an announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, today. He added that the local district Public Works engineer had immediately arranged to take emergency action and provide temporary shelter where it was needed in the shape of tarpaulins, and for men to collect iron blown from the roofs. Carpenters were brought from an aerodrome to make temporary repairs where they were most urgently required. Other supplies, labour and materials were being arranged. An officer of the Treasury Department will be sent to Kaitaia to deal with requests for financial assistance. Mr Sullivan expressed the Government’s sympathy with those who suffered loss and injury, especially with the relations of the boy who lost his life.
