Sporting RIVERTON TEAMS IN TRAINING
J. LANGFORD TAKES OVER STRING Mr D. M. Tweedie, president of the Riverton Racing Club, will have a team of four horses to race for him this season. They are Gold Flight, Winning Flight, Royal Flight and Alpine. Royal Flight is the two-year-old by Salmagundi-Francolin, who will make a bid to emulate Winning Flight’s success in the McLean Stakes. The string has been taken in hand by J. Langford, the well-known trainer and horseman. W. t. Rainbow, who led in two winners for Mr Tweedie last year, is now in camp. Mr Tweedie's horses have engagements at the Otago Hunt meeting next week. Youngsters A. McKay, who at one stage last season had Sally Lunn, Sing Sing and Boaform in his stable at Riverton, will have a (full-time job this year educating some young material. Amorlad is the only member of last year's team in his string this season. Flying Sally is a full-sister, to Sing Sing (Salma-gundi-Shelter). She already shapes as it she will follow in the footsteps of her sister. Three other juveniles in the stable are a filly by Salmagundi-Tea Party, a halfsister to Sir Saladin (Salmagundi-Cetchela. , and a gelding named Air Chief, which will race in the colours of Mr H. Insall, who raced Southern Light two seasons ago. Coxcomb and Pro Rata Coxcomb has been taken in hand by G. McLean, who also has Pro Rata in his stable. Coxcomb (Philamor-Egotist) is now eight years old and has not raced for three or four years. Pro Rata (Lord Warden-Waiau Maid) was started three times last season. Both of these horses will race in the ownership of Mr H. McFarlane. G. McLean is also handling a Four Chimes trotting mare. Steeplechase Double Two steeplechase wins on one programme is not usual nowadays, but Comrie accounted for both cross-country events at the Pakuranga meeting. Comrie is by Surveyor from White Sox, and failed to win in three starts last season. Gascony Dead The stallion Gascony has died at the West Derby stud, Ohau. Gascony had been at Ohau only a few weeks, having been with Mr T. H. Lowry up to this season. The new stallion at the West Derby stud will be Tiderace. Tiderace has also previously been on stud duty with Mr Lowry, and while in New Zealand only had three outside mares, but has served all Mr Lowry’s mares, who are mostly descended from Desert Gold. Merry Simon is one of Gascony’s progeny. Galloping Solidly Foxhaven will find the seven furlongs of the John Grigg Stakes to his liking judging by the track efforts of the Foxbridge gelding. Though he failed in the Cashmere Plate at the Grand National meeting, Foxhaven was running on solidly and he looks like being one of the leading three-year-olds at Rlccarton. Lady Don Last year Lady Don 7.8‘'2 was beaten by a length and a-half by Milton Abbas, 8.3, in the five-furlongs hack race at the Otago Hunt fixture, and with 7.7 won the sixfurlongs race the same afternoon by eight lengths from Raroa, 9.1, and Gnohill, 8.6. In 11 subsequent starts she won once over six furlongs at Gore under 8.13, and was twice third. With 9.6 in the five-furlongs race and 11b less in the six-furlongs race this year she cannot claim to have the best of the handicap. She meets Gnohill on 331 b worse terms. Promising Pair F. D. Jones has two of the most promising two-year-olds in work at Riccarton. Islam, a big bay colt by Bulandshar from Roman Scandal, is to carry Mr J. A. McDougall’s colours, while a solid bay gelding by Man’s Pal from Windshield is owned by Mrs J. W. Woodhouse, of Racecourse Hill. The Man’s Pal colt was always in the picture in the second division of the two-year-old parade at Riccarton, and may show form earlier than his stablemate. OTAGO HUNT CLUB’S ACCEPTANCES (P.A.)
