AMMUNITION FOR HOME GUARD
Sir, —It has been stated by some military authorities that the most necessary qualification of a rifleman is to be able to shoot accurately. Nevertheless, no ammunition has been available to Southland Home Guardsmen for practice with the rifles now on issue to them, which have been in their hands for some three months. This could, of course, be ' attributed to ammunition being in short supply, but this does not appear to be the case as it is understood considerable quantities of the same calibre ammunition have been issued to farmers in certain districts for deer destruction for the protection of farm crops—though the price of deer skins is a probable consideration by the farmer. Though sighting at objects and correct holding of a rifle are good preliminary training it has been proved that shooting at a mark or target is the only way to become a reasonably good marksman, and until such time as Home Guardsmen have had this necessary practice their value in case of being called upon to defend our shores is extremely doubtful. HOME GUARDSMAN.
