PETAIN ABOLISHES PARLIAMENT
VICHY, August 25. Marshal Petain has wiped out the French Parliament. A decree signed by Petain and Pierre Laval, the Prime Minister, has dissolved the French Senate and the Chamber of Deputies as permanent bodies. I The decree states that it is not considered necessary that the parliament- | ary bodies should continue in existence as they may not meet unless or until they are convoked by the marshal. Thus the present rulers of France have I eliminated from their official posts two of the notable figures of the French Republic in the past—Dr Edouard Herriot, President of the Chamber of Deputies, and M. Jules Jeanneney, President of the Senate. According to a later statement Laval and Petain have had a long conference on the political situation in France.
