DEFENCES PIERCED AT ONE POINT
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copjn-ight) (Rec. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON, August 26. German tanks have penetrated the Russian defences at one point on the Stalingrad front. The gravity of the threat to this great steel-making city is emphasized by the fact that it is now mentioned by the Russians as being within the area of operations. German tank forces which got across the Don a few days ago are now deploying under an air “umbrella” and fierce fighting is going on only 30 miles from the city. Already Stalingrad has been heavily bombed, but the Russians claim to have destroyed several planes and to have damaged many more. In the Caucasus the Germans are continuing their drive towards the Grozny oilfields. They are offering a serious threat to the military road leading over the Caucasus Mountains to Tiflis, but the Russians will have to defend it for only another two or three weeks. By that time it will be snowbound. The Russians have again withdrawn south of Krasnodar.
