Sporting MILLISLE AGAIN IN WORK

D.J.C. SPRING FIXTURE PROGRAMME The trotter Millisle, who has been off the scene for several months, is in work again. Last week he covered a mile and a-half in 3min 21sec in a manner suggestive of good things this season. Millisle was bred In Southland, and during the 1939-1940 season won eight races. He then became unreliable, and in 18 starts since then has got one third. He has not raced since December, and during his spell, his physical condition has Improved considerably. Dunedin Spring Meeting The sum of £2150 will be given in stakes at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting on October 10. The feature races are the Dunedin Guineas (£350), McLean Stakes (£300) and Ranfurly Handicap, IOVz furlongs (£400). Nominations will be taken on September 21. Southland Jockeys The Southland district should not be badly off for jockeys this season. The following have been granted licences as journeymen jockeys:—T. J. Boyle, W. F. Ellis, R. E. Humphries, C. F. Low, H. Preston, H. McT. Shannon and J. J. L. Strathern. The following are apprentice jockeys:—F. J. Boyle, P. J. Boyle, K. F. Brown, D. Dawson, K. R. Ford, R. A. Gibson, M. O. Hood, F. J. Langford, S. G. Shaw, T. H. Strathern, W. J. Thomson and K. E. Wilson. John Grigg Stakes Botany, a winner at the Grand National meeting, is not engaged in the John Grigg Stakes to be run at Ashburton next month. Horses likely to be favoured for the race are King Herod, Foxhaven and John Gay. Compeer Compeer carried 8.5 when he won the seven furlongs August Handicap at Riccarton, and in the mile Tally-Ho Handicapat the Otago Hunt meeting he has 8.4. The minimum at Riccarton was 8.0, while it is 7.0 at Wingatul. Compeer has thus gone up 131 b, but that should not stop him from winning. Ever England Ever England, after spelling at the Inglewood stud, is to rejoin C. C. McCarthys team. Ever England is at present on the schooling list. McCarthy has also made a start on Monetary, which had to be spelled early last season following an Injury to a leg. He appears to be quite sound now. National Double Padishah still remains the only horse to have won the Grand National Steeples and Hurdles in the same year. Two other horses have won both races, but not in the same year. Dummy, winner of the hurdles in 1896, returned to Riccarton two years later to add the big steeples. In 1901 Haydn won the hurdles and in the following year the steeples. “Unduly Magnified" Had Erndale won the Grand National Hurdles his success would not have been universally popular, remarks a northern writer, for the horse’s appearance supported the opinion of some Riccartonians that the extent of his injury had been unduly magnified. On the other hand, his defeat P ro ' , . ecl costly to many who had freely coupled him up with Foxlana in the big steeples.

Representative According to reports from Takaninl, Representative has done well through the winter. Luck did not favour Representative in the autumn, otherwise he might have possessed an even better two-year-old record. His admirers are sanguine that he will reach a high standard this season.

Nelson Eddy . . Nelson. Eddy is now being trained at Tinwald by C. Laing. During the past two seasons he has been under the care of l. O. Thomas at Addington, and in that time he secured five firsts, seven seconds and five thirds, and won £3169 in stakes. He has not raced since he ran second to Burt Scott in the Autumn Free-For-All at Addington at Easter, and being a gross horse, he takes a lot of work and racing to reach his best form.
