DEPARTURE OF TROOP TRAIN.— The Battalion Band, under Lieutenant A. McMaster, paraded at the railway station yesterday morning on the occasion of the departure of a troop train for the north. Before the departure of the train the band played appropriate selections. There was also a large crowd of relations and friends to see the men off. OFFER TO BILLET CHILDREN.—The Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, who has just returned from Stewart Island, states that one woman resident of the island came forward with an offer to billet, free of charge, two crippled children for a holiday. Several other residents made offers to billet returned soldiers for a short holiday at the Island. These 'offers were greatly appreciated by the Mayor, who visited the island for the purpose of investigating the possibilities of a scheme for the social rehabilitation of returned soldiers of the present war. FIRE IN UNOCCUPIED HOUSE.—The Invercargill Fire Brigade received a call at 9.10 o’clock last evening to a five-roomed house at 192 Lorn street. The house was unoccupied and it was not known last night who the owner is. Damage was done to the rear rooms of the house by heat and water. The cause $ the fire is unknown.
