SUBMARINE UPHOLDER LOST
(8.0.W.) RUGBY, August 24. The Admiralty announces with regret that the submarine Upholder has been lost.
Commenting that it is seldom that the Lords Commissioner of the Admiralty draws a distinction between services given in the course of naval duty, the statement says that the Upholder, under Lieutenant-Commander Wanklyn, V.C., D. 5.0., deserves special mention. The Upholder was for a long time employed against enemy communications in the Mediterranean, where the daring displayed was an inspiration to all others. Lieutenant-Commander Wanklyn was awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding valour, determination and leadership while in command of the Upholder during an attack on an enemy troop convoy strongly escorted by destroyers when the Upholder sank a large troopship. Lieutenant-Com-mander Wanklyn continued to show the utmost bravery in the presence of the enemy and his submarine subsequently sank one detroyer, one U-boat, two troop transports of 19,500 tons each, one tanker and three supply ships. .
