AMUSEMENTS ,ill|| STATE - ! ||||i. I|| Centrally Heated ' —HEARING AIDS AVAILABLE— Dir.: Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd. SPECIAL .ANNOUNCEMENT! . —“49TH PARALLEL”— —“49TH PARALLEL”— Extract from The Northern Advocate, June 29:— Staged against the vast background of Canada, from Hudson’s Bay to the West Coast and back to Ontario, “49th Parallel is one of the most ambitious open air pictures ever produced. An ex-Canadian among those who saw the film last evening, identified many of the places shown and vouched for the accurate depiction of Canadian life. The story concerns the trek of seven members of a U-boat crew across Canada in an attempt to find haven over the border. Their adventures take them from a Hudson Bay post to a German Hutterite settlement in the prairie provinces, to Banff and finally to Winnipeg and Ontario. With Laurence Oliver (Ober-Lieuten-ant), Leslie Howard (an artistic, degenerate democrat), Raymond Massey (a Canadian Trooper) and Anton Walbrook (a member of the crew) in the cast the portrayals cease to be acting, heightening the atmosphere of realism which makes this all-English production unique in every way. Not only is “49th Parallel” an adventure picture of the first water, it is also most topical and thought provocative. The reactions to war and life of such diverse characters as a Scotch trader, a' French-Canadian trapper, migrants who have sought space and liberty in a new world, a super-civilized man who prefers to reason rather than act, and of the members of the submarine crew themselves make a living document for democracy shorn entirely of any thought of propaganda.
