Late News TURKS MORE HOPEFUL ABOUT CAUCASUS
(Rec. 2.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 23. The fear of a German invasion from the Caucasus has almost vanished because of the Turkish belief that the Germans will be unable to overcome the Russian resistance in the southern Caucasus, says The Daily Mail’s Istanbul correspondent. The Turks’ attention is directed more to Egypt. The correspondent says that if Egypt falls Turkey’s communications with the Allies through Palestine, Iraq and Syria will then be menaced, threatening Turkey with serious isolation. The Turks are not neglecting defence preparations, but a large part of their attention is devoted to making themselves ready to play a leading part in the pacification of the Balkans after the Germans collapse. The majority of Turks believe that Germany will collapse in 1943. People reaching Turkey from Germany report that the Germans believe they will be unable to win the war unless the Red Army -is destroyed by early November, although many hope that the Japanese will save the situation for Germany. NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, August 24. Mr J. A. Beasley, Minister of Supply, commenting on imports of cheese from New Zealand, said one Victorian firm had been given permission to import a small quantity of matured cheese to mix with local cheese. Cheese was not the only item imported from New Zealand. Hides had been coming for months. Boots made in Australian factories from hides imported from New Zealand were now being worn by troops in Australia, India, Syria and the Middle East. SUBMARINE SUCCESSES LONDON, August 24. Submarine successes are reported by the Admiralty. A medium Axis supply ship in the Mediterranean which had been bombed by aircraft was later attacked by a British submarine. There was a tremendous explosion aboard and the ship sank at once. An escorted convoy was attacked off the coast of Norway by a British submarine which torpedoed and sank the leading merchantman.
