BOROUGH__COUNCIL Mr Maurice Cronin, who was appointed at the last meeting of the Gore Borough Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cr J. W. Cooper, was sworn in as a councillor last evening, and a welcome was given by the Mayor (Mr W. D. Shelton). The Eastern Southland sub-branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was granted permission to hold a street day at Gore on September 18. The council decided to give £5/5/- to the society’s funds. It was reported that the Deputy-Mayor, Cr G. C. Hamilton, had been nominated by the Gore and Mataura borough councils to fill the vacancy on the Bluff Harbour Board caused by the death of Mr A. H. Aitken. A decision was made to grant the Gore W.W.S.A. the use of the old baths reserve for the growing of vegetables for the forces. EARLY SETTLERS.—The annual report presented to the annual meeting of the Gore and District Early Setllers’ Association showed that the association had 69 members. There was a good attendance of members at the meeting and Mr D. Dickie was chairman. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr R. N. Fraser; vice-presidents, Messrs A. L. Dolamore, A. Reinke, J. Robertson, Henry Smith, Hugh Smith, M. Kirkpatrick, A. Speden; committee, Mesdames A. McLachlan, R. H. Newman, D. Dickie, Messrs J. C. Dickson, J. Cooney, A. Corbet, A. McLachlan, D. Dickie; auditor, Mr A. Speden; secretary and treasurer, Mr N. Robson. Six new members were elected. During the evening several items were given. REPERTORY SOCIETY.—The proceeds of the presentation of one-act plays by the Gore Repertory Society, amounting to £2l 5/-, have been given to the prisoners-of-war fund, according to a statement made by the secretary of the society at a meeting of the committee. A decision was made to present another programme of plays, the proceeds to be for patriotic purposes. GOLF.—A large field took part in the Gore Golf Club’s annual match for the Croydon Cup. The match was won by Miss D. Perry and J. P. Steans, who returned a card of 3 down. Mrs S. B. Taylor and A. Hain, with the same score, lost on the count back. _ MAYOR MEETS SOLDIERS—TweIve Gore soldiers, Sergeant C. L. Kirby, LanceCorporal S. S. Rose, Gunner R. M. Voight, Drivers S. G. Trussler and N. D. Kingdon, and Privates W. M. Burrows, B. Gentle, R. W. J. Ryder, J. A. Cowie, D. A. Ritchie, S. C. Leach and W. R. Thomson, who are visiting the town on leave, were met by the Mayor last night. The Mayor handed each man a cheque on behalf of the citizens of the town.
PERSONAL.—Sergeant Ronald R. Davidson, of East Gore, who has been visiting the town on leave, was met by the Mayor, Mr W. D. Shelton, before his return to camp and presented with a cheque on behalf of the citizens of the town. Mr Shelton also met Private Eric Allison yesterday morning and presented him with a cheque. Mr J. F. McArthur, a member of the reporting staff of The Mataura Ensign, who will leave Gore for camp next week, was bidden farewell by the Mayor at the Gore Borough Council meeting last night. The‘town clerk (Mr D. Harvey), who is suffering from ill-health, was granted two weeks’ leave of absence at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council.
