FIERCE FIGHTING IN DON BEND

NAZI HOLD ON DON NOT CONSOLIDATED (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 23. German attempts to consolidate their hold across the Don 40 miles from Stalingrad have been frustrated. A great German attack in the Kletskaya region was beaten back by the Russians and they have launched counter-attacks.

Russian troops are fighting fiercely along the whole Don bend and their performance is described as superb. Kletskaya itself is now behind the German lines. In the Caucasus the Russians have made another withdrawal in the Krasnodar area and the naval base of Novorossisk is in danger.
