FURNITURE FOR HOMES OF EX-SOLDIERS
DOMINION COMPETITION TO BE HELD An announcement that a competition in the designing of furniture for the home of returned soldiers would be held shortly was made in a national service broadcast last night by Mr M. Moohan, chairman of the Rehabilitation Board. He said it was deisred that the best possible. housing facilities be provided for returned soldiers and the making of beautiful furniture for their homes would give added employment to furniture tradesman after the war. • Mr Moohan said he had arranged with the Minister of Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) for six State houses to be built by the Housing Department to new designs and their construction would be completed to coincide with the closing of the competition. Special furniture would be made for these houses for comparison with the theoretical designs submitted in the competition, of which full details would be announced later. Mr Moohan said that quite a number of returned soldiers had already bought houses, but he emphasized that for a returned soldier to buy for himself and his family a home formerly occupied by another family was not solving the problem of the increased housing accommodation which would be required after the war. Housing for returned soldiers would be an important work and plans for it would be put in hand as soon as possible.
