ALLOWANCE FOR BOOT REPAIRS
PLEA ON BEHALF OF HOME GUARDSMEN A question to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) about the payment of an allowance to Home Guardsmen to pay for the cost of repairs to their boots was asked in the House of Representatives last week by Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P. “It is understood by Home Guardsmen generally that an allowance of 8/a year would be made to them to enable them to keep in repair the boots worn by them when engaged in military service,” Mr Denham said. “Will the Minister see to it that this .money is made available forthwith?” In a note to his question, Mr Denham said Home Guardsmen, who were chiefly working men, were compelled to give military service. This involved heavy wear and tear on boots, under-cloth-ing, socks, bicycle tyres and other incidentals which the guardsmen had to meet. They could ill-afford to do so from their weekly wages.
