PRIMARY PRODUCTION COUNCIL The opinion that recommendations about appeals from the district production councils should be sent to the council for considerstion and not direct to the Appeal Board was expressed by several members at a meeting of flic Gore Primary P rodi - ic 4 t ' on . Council yesterday. It was pointed out that the task was a big one and an important one, and that it was felt that the council should carry the responsibility. It was also stated that appeals approved by the council would carry more weight. Elder referred to domestic help on the farms and said that the position was serious. Girls were being taken from the farms and placed in factories and he considered something should be done about it. The chairman Mr Henry Smith, and Mr Elder were appointed to confer with the women’s organizations on the subject. PORTRAIT UNVEILED.—A simple but impressive ceremony—the unveiling of a portrait of Major Ihomas Fyfe ,a member of the teaching staff of the school from 1923 to 1939, who was killed in action in Crete last year was held at the Gore High School yesterday morning. The portrait, which was presented to the Board of Governors by the school council as a memorial to Major Fyfe, will be hung in the assembly hall. Tlie rector, Mr E: H. W. Rowntree, presided, associated with him being the Mayor, Mr W. D. Shelton, the chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr E. C. Smith, find the president of the Gore R.5.A.,, Mr IV. H. Sadlier. High tributes to the qualities of Major Fyfe w'ere paid by the speakers, and the two head prefects, Eva McDowell and E. Robertson, briefly addressed the school before handing over the portrait to the Board of Governors. ONE-DAY SHOW.—A decision to conduct a one-day show this year was made at a meeting of thb executive of the Gore -Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. It was stated that Clutha and Southland would be holding shows, the latter on a restricted scale, and that Winton had decided to abandon its show. Wyndham had not yet made a decision. It was decided that the association should go ahead with arrangements for a one-day show and a subcommittee was set up for this purpose. PERSONAL.—Private J. R- C. Wallace, of East Gore, who is home on leave, was met by the Mayor, Mr W. D. Shelton, yesterday and presented with a cheque on behalf of the citizens of the town. Mr J. T. Martin, managing director of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., visited Gore/yesterday. Private P. Forbes, who is home on leave, was entertained at a social evening in the Waimumu hall. During the evening a presentation was made by Mr Hedley. Mr Williams also spoke on behalf of the Returned Services Association.
