Visit To Battle-Fronts

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 20,

Mr Wendell Willkie announced that he was leaving shortly for the Near East and Russia to perform certain services for the Government.

Mr Willkie said that it was his own idea and he had requested and received President Roosevelt’s permission some time ago. Mr Roosevelt asked Mr Willkie to undertake certain services. He hopes to confer with M. Stalin and visit the battlefronts. He expects to depart in about three weeks, returning by October 15.

Mr Willkie had lunch with Mr Roosevelt at the White House
