AIR GUNNER’S ESCAPE
Left Hanging In Mid-Air (Special Australian Correspondent, N.Z.P.A.)
(Rec. 10.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 20. An amazing story of escape from death is told by an American air gunner, Sergeant G. C. Hollister. He was under-gunner in a heavy bomber which attacked Zeros over New Guinea when a cannon shell blew off the door of his turret. Sergeant Hollister fell out backwards, but his feet caught behind the bar connecting the twin guns, leaving him hanging in mid-air. He shouted for help through the transmitter of the plane’s inter-communication system and another gunner puller him back into the plane, rescuing him from a drop of 20,000 feet.
