REDUCTION OF PUBLIC WORKS
TOTAL DOWN TO £4,802,200
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 20. A further reduction of public works throughout the Dominion during the year is evidenced in the Public Works Statement, which was presented to the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. The net expenditure for the year amounted to £10,599,566, of which £5,750,175 was from loan moneys and the balance from loan recoveries, war expenses revenue and taxation. The estimated net expenditure under the Public Works Account for the current year was £1,110,000 with £2,000,000 from the Electric Supply Account and £1,692,200 from the Main Highways Account, making a total of £4,802,200. Excepting for urgent and essential works no new highways had been started during the year and expenditure from the Public Works Fund for railways improvements amounted to only £147,641 against £1,087,337 the previous year. The erection of new department buildings, with the exception of hospital buildings, had practically ceased.
