Dr F. J. Turner, lecturer in geology at Otago University, visited Invercargill to deliver an address to the Southland branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He will return north today. Mr E. McPhail, of Christchurch, who was at one time manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Invercargill and later a regular visitor - to Southland centres as an inspector of the bank, arrived in Invercargill yesterday on a short visit. He is staying at the Grand Hotel.
Dr A. H. McLintock, lecturer in history at Otago University, will arrive in Invercargill by the mid-day express tomorrow to deliver an address to the music section of the, University Association of Southland.
Mr Charles Warden, the oldest director of the Grove Bush Dairy Factory Company Ltd., retired from the directorate at the annual meeting because he had sold his herd. It was stated that he had been a director in the early stages of the company and except for a short break had been a director continuously. He had been the largest supplier of the factory. A minute of appreciation of his services was recorded.
Advice has been received that Mr O. G. Gilmour, formerly of the staff of Macalister Bros., solicitors, Invercargill, has received his commission in the New Zealand Artillery;
Messrs C. E. Watts and A. Cook, who were recently elected to the Southland Technical College Board as representative of employers’ associations and employees’ associations respectively were welcomed by the chairman, Mr J. H. Reed, at last night’s meeting of the board.
Mr J. H. Reed was last night reelected chairman of the Southland Technical College Board of Managers for the twenty-second year in succession. On the motion of Mr W. G. Tait, seconded by Miss C. McLeod, it was decided to place on record the board’s appreciation of Mr Reed’s long service to the cause of technical education in Southland. Mr Tait said that Mr Reed had been a member of the board for 26 years. Messrs A. D. Highsted and W. Dukes, who retired from the directorate of the Hedgehope Dairy Factory Company Ltd., were thanked at the annual meeting of shareholders for their services. It was stated that both had been directors for many years and had done excellent work for the company.
Cabled advice has been received by Mrs G. A. Murray, 102 Avenal street, that her husband has been promoted to the rank of major.
Mrs E. M. Rogers, Lowe street, has received word that her son, Private Harold Rogers, was recently promoted corporal and three weeks later received further promotion to the rank of sergeant. Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs H. A. Pierce, Winton, that their son, Bombardier N. E. Pierce, who is serving in the Middle East, is safe and well.
Corporal K. W. Shirlaw, of No. 3 Platoon, A Company, Invercargill Home Guard Battalion, was farewelled on Wednesday evening by members of the platoon before his departure for Waimatuku. The officer commanding the platoon, Mr C. W. Jones, said Corporal Shirlaw, one of the original members of the Home Guard, had given particularly valuable service and he would take the good wishes of everyone with him. Other members of the platoon also spoke. Captain E. Allan McPhail, who was recently awarded a bar to his Military Cross, is a son of Mr E. McPhail, of Christchurch, who was manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Invercargill about 20 years ago. Captain McPhail was a pupil at Waihopai school and later at the Waitaki Boys’ High School. He joined the Bank of New Zealand in Invercargill, and after serving at several northern branches returned to the Riverton branch He enlisted for military service at the beginning of the war and went overseas with the 2nd Echelon. He took special courses in military intelligence in England and in Egypt- He served in the Greek campaign and was awarded the Military Cross, and he was later engaged in the Libyan campaign of last November. In the recent fighting he was awarded a bar to his decoration.
