MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM SYRIA

Sir, —During a recent distribution of patriotic parcels to my unit (a Wellington battalion), it came to my notice that a large proportion of the parcels were donated by various patriotic organizations throughout Southland, including the Athol, West Plains and Edendale committees.

On behalf of the recipients of these excellent parcels, I should like, through the columns of your paper, to offer sincere thanks to the patriotic committees of Southland.

Were it possible for any members of these committees to be present at any one of these distribution parades, which were held at various camps on the hills and plains of Syria, to hear the remarks of thanks and appreciation spoken by the men, I’m certain they would consider that the great pains which have evidently been taken in preparing the parcels were well worth while. Being the only Southlander in the particular company to which I am attached, it was with a feeling of pride that I observed where such excellent parcels had originated. Once again sincere thanks for what were unanimously voted the best.patriotic parcels yet received by the unit.

J. MILNE, Lieut. Middle East Forces, June 11, 1942. COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS Sir,—The motto for all the people of New Zealand, whether in Red Gross, Patriotic or any other organization, who work to support our soldiers, is service before self, and I appeal once again for all sections to unite, stop all letter writing and unfair criticism, and work harder than ever.

There is one war and one fund, which supplies the needs of our soldiers, whether they are in the front line, the hospital or prisoners-of-war. Send in your contributions immediately to the nearest secretary of a patriotic committee and thus show you believe in the above motto.

P. L. HODGE. Chairman, Invercargill Patriotic Committee. August 19, 1942.
