Sporting THREE WINNERS AT NATIONAL
SOUTHLAND HORSES EARN £l4BO
Three winners and two placings enabled Southland horses to win £l4BO at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. That amount would have been increased by £2lO but for the bad luck which attended Heidelberg's running in the Spreydon Hurdles. Bashful Lady and Anglo-French each won £560 and Surcoat. for a first and a third, got £240. Messrs W. E. and J. S. Hazlett were the most successful owners: they won £6BO by the good work of Anglo-French and Noko. Three Southland jockeys, W. F. Ellis, K. R. Ford and K. E. Wilson, rode winners. Compeer’s Rider Compeer, winner of the August Handicap on Saturday, was ridden by W. F. Ellis, who thus scored three successes (Bashful Lady twice and Compeer) at the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National meetings. Ellis has ridden on an average of just over 16 winners for each of five seasons he has been riding. He has made a good start for the new season and he should have no difficulty in reaching the first century this season.
Sea Max and Echoist Sea Max, from 48 yards behind, has a solid task in front of her In the Army Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. She will have to give 12 yards to Echoist, who was eight times in the money in nine starts last season. He is a very dependable sort, a brother to Lament, and one which is capable of improvement. At Forbury Park last December he beat a 3.44 class pointlessly and cut out the mile and a-half in 3.27 4-5 from a 3.43 mark. Rode Prince Shad K. E. Wilson, the Invercargill apprentice who has been freely engaged at northern meetings in the last few months, had his first winning mount since Easter when he rode Prince Shad in the Sumner Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. Wilson has now ridden 11 winners. Favourites Hardy Oak and Busted Flush will probably carry most of the money in the Churchill Handicap at Forbury on Saturday. Busted Flush will be bracketed with Ronald Logan.
Danny Malone Mr J. Hunter's recent purchase, Danny Malone, is a five-year-old stralghtout trotter by Quite Sure from Edith Bingen. He was started four times last season without running into a place, but he showed a lot of promise.
Phalanx ' Phalanx won the Otago Hurdles like a champion in the making, but he’ has not lived up to that promise. On Saturday in the Spreydon Hurdles he hit a hurdle and dropped his rider (A. Ingram).
Owner-Trained The three first races at Riccarton on Saturday were won by owner-trained horses —Valens, Prince Shad, and Anglo-French. Cup Specialist Valens has become something of a Hunt Cup specialist, having now won four of these races, including two dead-heats at Waimate. He has proved himself master of the Riccarton fences on several occasions, and he won very easily in the Hunt Cup on Saturday. On this trip he won two races and was third in the Grand National.
A Smart Galloper Prince Shad, who has been trained by his owner for some time, and was taken earlier in the year on a trip to the North Island, is a bold galloper, and but for minor troubles would have a much better record. His dam, Wanaka, is one of the Silver Peak family, but her name is not in the Stud Book. OTAGO HUNT CLUB’S HANDICAPS (Special) DUNEDIN, August 18.
