NEW UNITED STATES FIGHTER
(Rec. 6.30 pm.) WASHINGTON, August 16. Lieutenant-General 11. H. Arnold, Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Air, declared that the United States had developed a new high altitude fighter, the Republic P 47, or Thunderbolt, which, it was believed, was able to outfly any one known aeroplane. The Thunderbolt carried guns generating an impact equal to the force of a five-ton lorry hitting brick walls at 60 miles an hour, Lieutenant-General Arnold asserted. He gave illustrations from official reports.
