INCREASING DEMAND FOR BEEF
GREATER PRODUCTION URGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. “The demand for beef of all types is likely to be considerably increased,” the Hon. W. J. Polson, Minister of Primary Production for War Purposes, said today when he appealed to beef producers and dairy farmers to make every endeavour to produce sufficient beef and veal to meet Dominion and export requirements. “With increased beef slaughterings and increased demands likely to be made for beef supplies by the armed forces, the supply of beef cattle may fall short of requirements,” Mr Polson added. “It is reasonable to assume that a further demand for beef for internal requirements can be met only by a curtailment of export beef. That would be most unfortunate and must be avoided if possible.” Mr Polson asked runholders to maintain beef production and increase it where possible. He also appealed to dairy farmers to produce vealer calves as veal requirements were expected to be in excess of the present production. He suggested for breeding the use of cows that would otherwise be culled from milking herds, and also suggested that sheep farmers could help by increasing the number of cattle normally carried with their sheep.
