WYNDHAM RACING CLUB
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR Satisfaction with the results of the activities of the club was expressed by the president of the Wyndham Racing Club (Mr E. J. Traynor) when reviewing the past season at the annual meeting of the club on Saturday night. The profit on the year’s working (£170). although not as large as that of the previous season, was quite satisfactory. There had been a decrease of £3OO in the gate takings at the annual meeting and the totalizator returns showed a drop of £4OOO, but those decreases could be put down to the loss of patronage because of the absence of suitable transport services and the general conditions at the present time. In spite of the conditions the club was going to keep going, however. Racing was an excellent means of stimulating public morale in such trying times and therefore It was the duty of clubs to carry on. He sympathized with those clubs which had lost racing days and hoped the time was not far distant when a normal racing calendar again would be available. The club’s property and appointments were in excellent condition: improvements had been carried out and it was hoped to put into operation at an early date additional works of improvement. The annual report and balance-sheet, moved by the president and seconded by Mr F. Milne, were adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr E. J. Traynor; vice-president, Mr F. Milne; committee, Messrs J. Woods, A. Greenlees, W. Irvine, A. Campbell, W. McDonald and D. N. A. Macpherson. Mr P. B. Barnett was re-elected auditor. ANNUAL SOCIAL Tile lead which had been given and maintained by the Wyndham Racing Club in promoting the social side of the sport was freely commented upon by visitors at the annual social function of the club in the Wyndham Masonic Hall on Saturday night. Representatives of Gore and Invercargill clubs praised the officials of the Wyndham club for their consideration of their members and others, and stated that it was social enterprise which could well be adopted by other clubs. Mr Traynor presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. Mr N. R. Brown (Invercargill) proposed the toast of the Wyndham club and congratulated the committee on the success of its season. He referred to the policy of the committee in thinking of its supporters, and said that although times were not good the committee again had been bold enough in its outlook to conduct another social function. “Your club leads racing in this respect in Southland,” said Mr Brown. He was a strong believer in the social side of the sport, said the chairman in reply. The Wyndham club was fortunate in not losing its racing day and it would continue to put on attractive programmes. Other toasts honoured were: “Wyndham Trotting Club” (proposed by Mr W. L. McGoldrick, Gore, and responded to by Mr J. Hunter); "Sister Clubs and Visitors” (replied to by Messrs J. C. Ray, Gore, and G C. Cruickshank, Invercargill; "R.S.A. and Fighting Forces” (Messrs S. Clarke and J. Halliday); “Local Bodies and Financial Interests” (Messrs L. Harper and F. Dunbar); “Trainers” (Mr A. McLellan). An enjoyable concert programme was given by Messrs D. N. A. Macpherson, B. D. Bennie, L. Brown, J. Brown, J. Halliday, W, McGillivray, D. Hunter and J. Halliday, juri. (accompanist).
