BLACK MARKET IN STEEL
(Rec. 7 p.m.) CLEVELAND (Ohio), Aug. 15.
The Office of Price Administration has obtained a temporary restraining order of the Federal Court against a steel buyer involved in an alleged black market for steel operations. The Attorney of the Office of Price Administration said proceedings were aimed at the prevention of black market sales of steel. It is alleged that Williard Markle, a Cleveland steel buyer, purchased steel from various warehouses and resold it to Higgins Industries Incorporated at a price averaging 20 dollars a ton above the ceiling price. The injunction suit specifically charges Markle with disposing of 160,000 pounds of steel to Higgins Industries at excessive prices. Markle told investigators that he carried his office in his hat. It is alleged that Markle netted profits of 5000 dollars from black market steel in one week.
