FINE SINGING BY GIRLS’ CHOIR
A programme of outstanding musical interest was presented for the second time by the Southland Girls’ High School Choir in a patriotic recital at the Victoria Hall on Saturday night. It is seldom that young singers are heard in a recital of such quality and the large audience was generous in its applause. The programme included the secular "Peasant” Cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, a cheerful work into which the soloists and choir entered with zest. The cantata had been well rehearsed and it was given a vigorous performance under the conductorship of Miss M. B. Campbell, who deserves considerable credit for the selection of such an admirable programme and its careful preparation. The soloists were Misses Dorothy Strathem, Patricia Adamson, Joan Simmonds, Myra McDougall, Helen Galt, Julia Millar, Eileen Deaker, Molly Macallster and Shirley Welsford.
Another work' of considerable Interest was the operetta "The Stranger” to music by Schumann, a short and bright operetta, which was also well performed. The soloists were Misses Dorothy Wlllocks, Isobel McKay, Helen Galt. Doris Strathem, \Molly Macallster, Shirley Lilley, Shirley Wefisford, Marjorie Lange and Jose Roderique. The programme also Included a series of part songs. The pianists were Misses Elaine Hulse and Hazel Christie. Spoken introductions to the principal works by Misses Ivy Poole and Shirley Cameron added to the enjoyment of the music.
