N.Z. FITTER INSTRUCTS AMERICANS
(Special Correspondent, N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, August 13. One of the few, if not the only, New Zealand armoured fitter posted to an American fighter squadron is Corporal Clifford Crawford, of Gore. He spent 18 months in England with Spitfire squadrons until last month, when he was sent to the American squadron on the station which the New Zealand Spitfire squadron recently left. Corporal Crawford instructs Americans on servicing Spitfires. “They are grand chaps and pick up things quickly,” he said. “I have to give lectures and demonstrations. They are keen for new ideas and I have never seen better tool kits than theirs. They work flat out when on the job. They want me to remain with them and I hope I will be allowed to.”
Corporal Crawford is a son of Mrs L. Crawford, Irving street, Gore. He was born at Gore and received his education at the Gore Public School and the Gore High School. He was later employed by Mr F. Steele for two or three years and at the time of his enlistment he was an agent at Gore for the T. and G. Mutual Insurance Co. Ltd.
