Some fine bullocks were yarded in the cattle pens, prime conditioned sorts realizing up to £l6/10/- and lighter £9 to £lO 10/-. Well-finished cows sold from £lO 7/6. to £l4/7/6, lighter up to £9, and twoyear steers to £B/13/-. One full dairy herd of cows averaged £ll/7/6, the top price being £l7/10/-. DUNEDIN MARKETS (P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 14. There is no change in the oats market and the fact that further importations of barley are being received in the North Island practically disposes of the possibility of local surplus finding an outlet there. Inquiries for lines of seed oats for spring sowing are now being received, and favourable weather experienced during the winter should enable operations to proceed in an expeditious manner. An announcement has been made by the Government that there will be a shortage of potatoes before the new season’s are available and there appears to be no prospect of relief in the meantime. The requirements of the armed forces in Otago and Southland will have to be met from Canterbury, as local merchants are without supplies. Lack of business in seeds with the Home markets continues, but a few inquiries have been received during the week from Australia, presumably for the spring sowing trade. Montgomery mother seed is being inquired for locally. Little fresh business in fescue is being recorded from America. Stocks of this seed have now passed into merchants' hands. Prices for cocksfoot continue high, with supplies on the short side.
