HOME GUARDSMEN IN BALLOT
A large number of members of the Home Guard were In the sixteenth ballot, In which married men aged 32, 33 and 34 were called up for general service. The number of Guardsmen in No. 12 military area called up In this ballot and passed as fit for territorial service is 471. In addition there was a considerable number of Guardsmen in this ballot who have been classed as grade three by- the doctors. It does not follow, of course, that Home Guard units in the area are to be deprived of 471 members. Appeals have been lodged for many of these men and no doubt a considerable proportion will result in sine die adjournments. Each Home Guard battalion in No. 12 area has contributed Its quota, the total of 471 being made up as followsLumsden battalion 48, Clutha 54, Gore 85, Tapanui 43, Winton, 47, Invercargill 65, Awarua 32, Tuatapere 30, Riverton 51, Lines of Communication Company 16. The total number of men in No. 12 military area called up in the sixteenth ballot was 1290.
