PAYMENT MADE TO SUPPLIERS
WOODLANDS DAIRY FACTORY
A distribution of £2400 was made by a final payment of 1.45 d per lb of butterfat at the annual meeting of the Woodlands Dairy Factory Company, bringing the total payment to suppliers for the season to £29,350, equal to l/6.45d per lb butterfat. The chairman (Mr James Henderson) said that the output of 451 tons of cheese would have been even greater if the factory had continued to its normal closing time, but the milk was sold to New Zealand Milk Products Ltd. at the end of June.
It had been anticipated earlier that serious difficulty might arise in staffing the factory and that dairy factories might have to employ all married men, he said. No arrangement could be made by the Government to provide houses on a rental basis, so the company seriously considered the erection of one or more houses for its employees. The directors went so far as to purchase half an acre of land adjoining the factory for £4O. As the Government had now decided to release men for dairy factory work no further steps had been taken towards having buildings erected. It was decided to make a contribution of £2/2/- to the Southland Crippled Children Society.
