SOUTHLAND CASUALTIES Gunner Benjamin H. Richardson, who is missing, is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs B. Richardson, Wyndham. He was born and educated at Wyndham and later entered the motor-carrying busmess. He was working at Arrowtown when he enlisted with the 2nd Echelon. He was a keen footballer, playing . for the Wyndham Club and representing Eastern District and also gaining representative honours in the Lakes District. Lieutenant Paul G. McLauchlan, who has been reported wounded, is the seventh son of Mr and Mrs E. M. McLauchlan, Invercargill. He was educated at the Middle school and the Southland Boys’ High School. Before his enlistment he was employed as a panel beater in Dunedin. Lieutenant McLauchlan was one of the outstanding athletes produced in Invercargill in the last decade. He established several records while at the Southland Boys High School and in Melbourne in 1934 he won the centenary mile for secondary school athletes in New Zealand and Australia. He was also a member of the Old Boys’ Football Club. A brother, 2nd Lieutenant K. F. M. McLauchlan, was decorated with the Military Medal while serving in Greece. Private G. McLauchlan was killed during the last Libyan campaign and Gunner E. J. McLauchlan is employed at the Base Records in Egypt Private Robert O’Brien, who has been reported wounded, is 29 years of age, and is the third son of Mr and Mrs D. H. O’Brien, Lillburn. He was born at Invercargill and educated at the Slope Point and Clifden schools. On leaving school he worked on his father’s farm and also in the Brydone and Greenvale districts. He was an enthusiastic follower of all the sporting activities of his district. He enlisted at the beginning of the war and left New. Zealand in 1941- Another brother, Sapper D. H. O’Brien, is a member of the Forestry Unit in England. Private W. H. R. Anglem, who is reported wounded, is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Anglem, Bluff. His age

is 23. He was born in Bluff and educated at the Bluff School and Southland Technical College. Before enlisting he was employed on the waterfront. He also served in Suva with the 3rd reinforcements. Private Anglem is well known as a Rugby footballer. Private Eric M. Kennedy, who has been reported wounded, is a son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Kennedy, Moa Flat. He was bom at East Gore and he received his education at the Longridge Village school. Later he was employed at Wyndham and Pine Bush. At the time of his enlistment he was employed at the Aparima dairy factory. Private William Macleod, who was wounded recently, is a son of Mr and Mrs D. Macleod, Hokonui. Private Macleod went abroad with the 2nd Echelon and saw service in Greece and Libya. He was educated at the Hokonui school and before going overseas assisted his father on the farm.

. Private Frank McMurtrie, who has been wounded for the second time, went overseas with his brother in the Ist Echelon, being followed later by two more brothers. He served throughout the Greek campaign and was wounded for the first time in Crete, but recovered in time to take part in the second Libyan campaign. Of the --four brothers three were in action together, one being wounded and later repatriated. Before going overseas Private McMurtrie played football and competed in the chopping events at North Island shows. Private P. I. Houston, who has been reported wounded, is the second son of Mr and Mrs D. Houston, Edendale. He was bom and educated at South Hillend. At the time of his enlistment he was employed by Mr J. A. Brown, Waianiwa. His younger brother, Gunner H. D. Houston, is also serving in the Middle East. Private R. Willis, reported wounded, has been overseas for about 18 months. He is 27 years of age and was educated at the Waihopai School. At the time of his enlistment he was employed by D. Kingsland and Sons. He was also wounded in the previous Libyan campaign. His wife is Mrs W. E. Willis, Bank street, Invercargill. Major D. B. Cameron, who was reported wounded on overseas service, has been discharged from hospital, according to advice received in gillMr and Mrs G. R. Herron, of Balfour, have received advice that their son, Sergeant R. G. Herron, is safe and well.

Mrs J. R. Lynch, Alice street, Invercargill, has received cabled advice that her husband, Sergeant J. R. Lynch, is safe and well.
