APPEAL ALLOWED.—A direction of the district man-power officer that permission to terminate his employment with the New Zealand Paper Mills Ltd. be withheld until such time as a suitable substitute was found was appealed against by Mr H. Thompson, an employee of the mills, at a sitting of the Industrial Man-Power Committee at Mataura yesterday. The appellant, who is 63 years of age, said that he wished to take up a position as lay-reader at Lauder for the Presbyterian Church. After hearing the evidence the decision of the committee was that the appeal be allowed and that the appellant be permitted to terminate his employment after August 28. BIG AIR RAID SHELTER.— Tunnellers early yesterday afternoon fired the shot which finally pierced a tunnel 2000 feet long under Albert Park, Auckland, extending from Victoria street to Constitution Hill. The Mayor, Mr J. A. C. Allum, and the city engineer, Mr Tyler, shook hands through the final opening. The tunnel and side tunnels provide air raid accommodation for 20,000 people in the heart of the cityP.A.
