RUBBER SHORTAGE
(PA.) GREYMOUTH, August 12. Replying to a,recent statement by the Auckland Bureau of Importers that the rubber shortage was due to the refusal of the Hon. W. Nash to grant import licences in 1939-40, the Hon. R. Semple said this was untrue. Every country was in the same position and to blame Mr Nash for the shortage in New Zealand was as unfair as to blame him for the shortage in the whole British Empire. A cable just received from Canada showed that the position was very serious there, and America had denied tvres to civilians for three years. If a scapegoat were needed the bureau should blame the Malayan rubber kings, who refused to sell at the price offered by the Soviet before the Japanese invaders got the whole lot.
