PRIORITIES IN USE OF TAXIS

SYSTEM SUGGESTED BY MINISTER A system of priorities for the use of taxis during periods when the vehicles are busy or when petrol supplies are running short has been suggested to taxi control committees by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple. The system is already being operated as required in Invercargill, preference being given to urgent cases when few cars are available to accept business available. , . , Essential taxi work has been placed in the following order: — First Preference.— Maternity calls, transport of sick and injured to and from hospitals, blood donors to hospital. Second Preference.— Transport of sick, injured and physically unfit people, blood donors from hospital, workers to and from work where other means of transport are not available, passengers with or without luggage to and from trains, steamers, and air services, unescorted women and children during blackout hours, urgent E.P.S. work, urgent -calls to see people dangerously ill, funeral and wedding cars, urgent business calls, transport to and from banks 'for people carrying money or transport for people carrying large sums of money, urgent- non-pleasure transport when other means of transport are not running. Classified as unnecessary work are trips exceeding 20 miles to and from race meetings or sports gatherings and trips to or from hotels other than to cater for the travelling public.
