LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

GOOD MARKET FOR FAT CATTLE A very large entry of store sheep was forward at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday and there was a firm sale for all classes, breeding ewes being in particularly keen demand. The fat sheep market was steady except for heavyweight ewes, which receded slightly in value. A smaller entry of fat cattle met z wth keener competition and prices advanced by about 15/- a head. The store cattle market was steady. FAT CATTLE.—The fat cattle entry was about one-third smaller than last week’s, there being 135 head offered compared with 192 last week. With the exception of a small percentage, the bulk of the entry was made up of only medium quality cattle. The inquiry was good and over the whole sale prices were about 15/- a head dearer than last week, with beef values about £2 per 1001 b. Prime heavy bullocks realized from £l7 to £lB/2/6, good quality £l5/10/- to £l6/10/-, medium £l4 to £l4/15/-, light weights £lO/10/- to £l2; prime heavy heifers up to £l3/10/-, good quality medium weights £lO/10/- to £ll/10/-, light weights £B/15/- to £9/10/-, small to £7/15/-, prime quality cows up to £l3, good quality £lO 5/- to £ll/10/-, medium £8 to £9, unfinished £6/5/- to £7/5/-, inferior £3/10/to £4/10/-. STORE CATTLE.—The yarding was a small one, the majority being empty cows which sold at full late rates. The cows in best condition sold at up to £6 with others from £3/10/- to £4/10/- and cull sorts down to £l. Rising three-year-old bullocks made up to £B/10/-, two-year-olds £6/10/to £7/10/- and yearling steers £4 to £5. A pen of well-bred mixed-sex calves brought from £l/10/- to £3. There was a large entry in the dairy section. A herd which was dispersed sold well at from £lO to £l6 with heifers up to £ll. Other guaranteed sorts realized from £8 to £lO, with average sorts from £4/10/- to £6. FAT SHEEP.—There was a full yarding of 813 head compared with 949 head last week. The yarding included some good quality sheep, both of wethers and ewes, with a bigger percentage of wethers than usual. The wether market was quite firm, best quality heavy ewes being about 1/6 a head cheaper and medium and lighter sorts about 1/6 a head dearer. Best prime heavy wethers realized from 42/6 to 44/6. prime quality 40/- to 41/6, medium weights 38/- to 39/-, light weights 35/6 to 37/-; best quality ewes to 28//9, prime heavy ewes 26/- to 27/3, good quality 24/6 to 25/6, medium weights 22/- to 23/-, light weights 19/- to 20/6, inferior 12- to 16/-, fat lambs 45/9. STORE SHEEP.—The entry of store sheep was the largest for some considerable time and totalled 2378 head compared with 809 last week. All classes of sheep sold at full market values. Best ewe hoggets made up to 37/-, others selling at from 33/- to 35/-, with smaller sorts down to 30/-. Best wether hoggets made up to 26/-, others selling at 22/- to 24/-, and smaller sorts down to 20/-. Good sound-mouthed ewes realized up to 30/-, others making from 23/- to 25/- and best failing-mouths to 23/-, medium weights from 10/- to 21/-, and aged down to 16/-. A pen of two-tooth ewes sold at 45/- with smaller sorts at 35/6. Wethers in good condition sold at up to 38/-, with others from 28/- to 30/-. STUD SOUTHDOWN EWES SOLD A stud Southdown, ewe flock was offered at the Lorneville stock yards yesterday on behalf of Sir Robert Anderson, Victoria Park. It was announced that through the studmaster being called up for military service it had become necessary to dispose of the sheep. The sheep were of excellent quality and attracted considerable interest, but there was not a keen demand. The stud ewes were sold at from 3 guineas to 6V 2 guineas, the total number offered being 50. The sale was conducted by the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., in conjunction with J. G. Ward and Co., Ltd. GORE STOCK SALE Tliere was a big yarding of cattle, mostly fat steers and heifers, forward at the fortnightly Gore stock sale yesterday. The demand was fairly sound and prices were about on a par with those ruling at recent sales. Fat steers made up to £l4/15/-, other prices being £l4/10/-, £l4, down to £l2, with poorer sorts selling at £lO down to £4/5/-. Fat heifers sold at from £7/7/6 up to £ll/5/-, other sorts selling at £4. The demand for fat wethers remained sound and these made as high as 43/3, others bringing 42/9, 39/- down to 36/6. Fat ewes also sold well and made up to 37/-. Sound mouth ewes realized 35/9 and full and failling mouth sorts brought 26/-. NEWSPAPER’S DIVIDEND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 11.
